California reports two more likely cases of bird flu infections among dairy workers
What's happening today with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH)? announced Two more dairy workers have tested positive for H5 avian influenza, bringing the total number of cases in the state to five in the past few weeks, confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
CDPH said in a statement that the two new possible cases were reported from the Central Valley, with no known link to human cases so far, and that the state has confirmed cases of infection from animals to humans. He said that this suggests that only infection is occurring.
The group also confirmed a third case recently reported by the CDC, adding that it was discovered through state testing and samples were forwarded to the CDC.
The latest patient had mild symptoms, including red eyes.
“So far, all patients have experienced mild symptoms, including red eyes and discharge (conjunctivitis). No one has been hospitalized,” CDPH said.
At a briefing last week, federal health officials praised California for aggressively monitoring its workforce and quickly identifying and tracking people with symptoms.
If the CDC confirms the state's two latest cases, the total number of cases nationwide since the beginning of the year will rise to 19. With the exception of the Missouri patient, all infections were associated with contact with sick cattle or poultry.
H5N1 hits 13 more dairy farms in California
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Confirmed There have been 13 more outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in dairy cows in California, bringing the total number of cases in the state since late August to 96.

Positive reaction of wild birds from the outbreak area
As investigations continue into how the virus is spreading on California farms, recent samples from wild birds in one of the affected Central Valley counties returned positive results for H5N1.
According to Afis Wild Bird confirmation listthe five birds that tested positive in Tulare County were sampled between September 17 and 21. Species included starlings, blackbirds, and pigeons.
In other developments, USDA APHIS Confirmed Another outbreak of H5N1 infection in poultry involves a location in Miami-Dade County where 70 birds are kept. Although the report does not say what type of facility the birds were kept in, many of the recent outbreaks in Miami-Dade have been linked to live bird markets.
