Welcome to the weekly seismic update from across the state, brought to you by the Alaska Earthquake Center, where we monitor ground shaking 24/7. During the past week, we recorded about 260 earthquakes. The largest was a magnitude 4 near Naknek, and four earthquakes were reported and felt.

In October 2024, increased seismicity at Spur Mountain volcano prompted the Alaska Volcano Observatory to raise that volcano's alert level to yellow (advisory). The largest earthquake, with a magnitude of 2.8, occurred on December 10 near the summit, and activity is still ongoing.

Alaska Earthquake Center analysts track notable volcanic earthquakes, which are common components of volcanic activity.

The rising gaseous magma expands and the rock cracks, creating new paths within the volcano. As the volcano swells, its walls can also crack. Each fracture is an earthquake, easily recognizable because it is shallow, usually low-magnitude, and close to an active volcano. Earthquakes can start months or mere hours before a volcanic eruption, but high activity isn't the only indicator.
