The Archdiocese of Los Angeles urges parishes to join Venezuela earthquake relief efforts

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Archdiocese of Los Angeles said its parishes and schools in Los Angeles County will hold emergency collections this month to help with relief efforts.

Father Miguel Acevedo is the pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church in South Los Angeles. In one interview, he showed ABC7 some of the supplies parishioners have already donated to victims of the Venezuelan earthquakes.

“Fortunately, my family is safe,” he said.

Acevedo is one of six Venezuelan priests in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He is leading efforts to collect and deliver much-needed supplies to Venezuela.

“We need non-perishable foods,” Acevedo said. “We need basic hygiene items. We need diapers and medicine.”

Parishioners helped prepare donations for shipping. Daniel Leyva is a parishioner who has been helping. Volunteers “separate everything from food, clothing, everything, put it in the right way, label it, and prepare it to be dropped off,” he said.

Linda Guzman is the principal at St. Paul’s Dual Language Academy in Arlington Heights. “We are all one,” she said. “We are a faith-driven community. We truly see each other as brothers and sisters, and our brothers and sisters need us now.”

This faith community will be here for a long time, Acevedo said.

“It’s not about quick response and immediate generosity,” he added. “But recovery will take a long time.”
