Volunteers wanted to help monitor earthquake activity in Donegal!

Ireland's earthquake monitoring body is looking for volunteers from Donegal to monitor earthquakes.

Donegal is the most seismically active county in Ireland, so when you feel the ground shifting beneath your feet, it may not be your imagination!

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS), in collaboration with the Irish Geological Survey, manages the Irish National Seismic Network (www.INSN.ie) and its associated citizen engagement programme, called QuakeShake (www.quakeshake.ie).

INSN monitors and reports earthquakes throughout Ireland and the surrounding seas.

QuakeShake is now calling on citizen volunteers to help monitor earthquakes in Donegal.

A special workshop will be held for interested participants at the Station House Hotel, Letterkenny on Thursday 14 November from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. This free event is part of Research Ireland 2024 Science Week.

Scientists and experts from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) will introduce participants to earthquake science and show how the public can contribute to recording local and global seismic activity right from their homes. In this workshop, attendees will learn about the QuakeShake project and how to directly contribute to the study of local earthquakes by hosting the QuakeShake seismometer for citizen science.

Approximately 20 seismometers will be raffled off for attendees to host in their homes.
