A 6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off the east coast of Cuba

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Cuba on Sunday, causing material damage in several areas as the island continues to recover from widespread power outages and the impact of two hurricanes over the past few weeks.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake was reported about 39 kilometers (24 miles) south of Bartolomé Masso before noon local time, about an hour after a 5.9-magnitude quake struck the area.

“There were landslides and damage to homes and power lines,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said, adding that the authorities were assessing the situation to begin recovery efforts.

Pictures of Granma province published by the state-run Cubadebate newspaper showed buildings with cracks in the walls and piles of debris scattered on the ground.

The municipality of Belón suffered “severe damage,” according to Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of Cuba's national seismological service.

“I cannot respond to messages or phone calls. I have not been able to post. The situation is very complicated,” he said on Facebook.

Residents in eastern Cuba told Reuters that the quake was as strong as any they had felt before.

“Strong as ever. On other occasions, we felt the earthquake but not as strong as we feel it now,” said Griselda Fernandez.

The quake was also felt in the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Guantanamo, where deadly Hurricane Oscar struck last month.

Another storm, Rafael, hit western Cuba on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane, knocking out power across the island, the latest major power outage in recent weeks.

Sunday's earthquake did not pose a significant tsunami threat, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Center, but it warned that there was a “very small possibility of tsunami waves along the coasts located near the epicenter.”

It appears that residents of the capital, Havana, did not feel the earthquake, but the shock waves reached South Florida, and footage on social media showed ceiling lights swaying from a tower in Miami.
