Strong earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June caused an estimated $19.6 billion in material damage, the World Bank said, highlighting the difficult path the country faces toward recovery.
The World Bank said in a statement on Thursday that 47 percent of the damage occurred in residential buildings, while 27 percent affected infrastructure and 26 percent affected non-residential buildings.

“The earthquakes have disrupted people’s lives, damaged critical infrastructure, and created new challenges for Venezuela’s recovery,” Susana Cordero Guerra, World Bank vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean, said in a statement. “Effective recovery begins with reliable evidence.”
Government authorities estimated that the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 killed at least 5,000 people and injured nearly 17,000 others. An additional 18,000 people remain homeless, as the country struggles to recover from the devastation amid continuing economic hardship.
Even before the disaster, the World Bank estimated that 76% of Venezuela’s population, suffering from years of economic mismanagement and crushing US sanctions, lived in poverty.
“Without additional timely investments, the negative impact on productive capacity and living standards will slow the road to recovery,” Cordero Guerra said.
The World Bank says its estimates are intended to provide the Venezuelan government and those hoping to help with recovery efforts with data on the scale of the challenges ahead.
The report, conducted using the Global Rapid Damage Estimation (GRADE), says areas of La Guaira State and Distrito Capital were most affected. The estimate is based on local seismic data, remote seismic models, satellite images, and damage reports issued by government and humanitarian groups.
While countries around the world have pledged support for Venezuela, it remains unclear where money for recovery could come from.
The United States, which has exercised significant control over Venezuelan affairs since the country’s former leader, Nicolas Maduro, was kidnapped in a military raid in January, announced Thursday that it would give more than $200 million to the Red Cross to help people affected by conflict and natural disasters.
“Today’s contributions support organizations that respond quickly when disasters strike, provide unparalleled access to people in need in conflict settings, and leverage pre-existing infrastructure around the world for disaster response and humanitarian response,” the diplomatic mission said in a statement.
This money does not appear to be specifically targeting Venezuela.
