The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has resigned after a damning report said the Church of England knew for years about child abuse involving more than 100 boys and young men who were physically and sexually assaulted. . Welby said in a resignation statement that he “must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and traumatic period between 2013 and 2024”. The spiritual head of the world's Anglican communion was accused by John Smyth QC of failing to act on reports of horrific child abuse. A review of the church's handling of the Smyth case said Justin Welby “could and should” have reported the case to authorities when he presented details in 2013. Mr Welby admitted the review made it clear he had “personally failed” to “investigate vigorously” when facts are presented. Smyth is believed to be the most prolific serial abuser linked to the Church of England, subjecting 130 victims to traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse. His abuse took place over nearly five decades and in three countries, according to the report. He targeted boys attending summer camps for Christian youth. Smyth abused 26 to 30 boys and young men in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s. He then relocated to Africa, where he abused 85 to 100 “young males between the ages of 13 and 17.” The report made it clear that as of July 2013, the Church of England was aware “at the highest level” of Smyth's abuse in the UK and should have reported it “properly and effectively” to the UK police and the relevant authorities in South Africa.
