INSN confirms a rare M1.6 earthquake near Bandon – report your experience on their website!

At 05:50:16 UTC on 19 November 2024, a small M1.6 earthquake occurred near Bandon, County Cork. The epicenter was located about 5 km northeast of Bandon and at a shallow depth of about 1 km below the surface.

Although the event was small, some audience members felt it. The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) and the British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the event through their seismic recordings. In addition, citizen science seismometers (Raspberry Shakes) in the south and west of Ireland also detected the event, demonstrating the growing contribution of community seismic monitoring under the QuakeShake programme.

James Grannell, technical officer at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS), noted the rarity of such events in the Cork region:

“Earthquakes in Cork are very rare. The last recorded earthquake was a M2.2 near Courtmacherry in December 2013, and before that, a M2.1 near Middleton in November 1981. These events have also been felt by members of the public.

The recent earthquake is a reminder of the generally low seismic activity in Ireland. Since its founding in 1977, INSN has documented only a small number of earthquakes felt in the Cork region, highlighting the importance of reports from the public to help understand the impacts of these events.

The public is encouraged to report their experiences with the Bandon earthquake by filling out the INSN questionnaire, which helps seismologists collect valuable data on how these events are felt in different areas.
