A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering former British MP and reality TV contestant Ann Widdecombe, police said.
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in southwest England on Thursday. Authorities said she died from serious injuries, Reuters reported.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
“This is truly shocking news, and my thoughts, I think all our thoughts, are with the family and friends of Ann Widdecombe at this horrible time,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. “Ann was a distinguished politician for many years with many accomplishments, and this is a huge, huge loss.”
Investigators do not believe the killing was politically motivated, Deputy Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police Matt Longman said.
“Our murder investigation is in its early stages but is progressing at a significant pace,” Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement.
Starmer said the safety of lawmakers was “of the utmost importance” and urged people to transcend political differences.
Widdecombe served in Parliament but rose to fame after leaving office as a contestant on reality TV shows Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She later joined the Brexit Party and became a spokesperson for the anti-mass immigration party Reform UK.
In an article on
Cloud9 Management, which represented Widdecombe for more than a decade, said his life was driven by his “strong Christian values and commitment to public service”.
“She loved political debate and, 16 years after leaving Parliament, she was still actively campaigning for Reform UK and providing forthright views on current issues across many radio and television programs (sic). Ann was a valued patron of many causes, particularly her animal charities,” the company said in a social media post.
In the past decade, two sitting British MPs have been assassinated.
In the midst of campaigning for Brexit in 2016, Labor MP Jo Cox was shot and stabbed by a Nazi-obsessed loner. Conservative lawmaker David Amess was fatally stabbed in 2021 by a man inspired by the “Islamic State” terrorist group.
