Saskatchewan expands coverage of Trikafta for cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis has traditionally been considered a fatal disease. However, thanks to medical advances and treatments, many patients are now living longer, healthier lives.

Patients in Saskatchewan may have an even brighter outlook thanks to expanded coverage of the drug Trikafta.

The state government announced it would expand the drug's coverage to patients with 152 rare genetic mutations. This change expands eligibility to most cystic fibrosis patients in Saskatchewan.

“We are pleased to be able to expand coverage of this treatment to more people in Saskatchewan with cystic fibrosis,” said Minister of Health Jeremy Cockrill. “We know that Trikafta improves patients' quality of life, so expanding its coverage to include these rare genetic mutations will help more people with CF and their families benefit for years to come. It means receiving benefits.”

Some people who have benefited from Trikafta include Lorna McEwan, who says the drug has kept her out of hospital and makes her feel healthier.

“I've been on this drug for three years and it's given me a new lease of life,” McEwan said. “When I was last admitted to the hospital, I was having so much trouble breathing that I was thinking of putting myself on oxygen when I was discharged… Within 24 hours of taking the medication, there was a big difference.

“I'm doing things I never dreamed I would do.”

Trikafta helps remove mucus caused by disease. McEwan said it not only improved her health, but also her sense of purpose.

“I know it’s been a huge transformation just for my family,” she said. “Just the fact that it makes me want to go out and live again and continue contributing to the community.”

The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Registry reports there are more than 130 people with the disease in Saskatchewan and about 4,500 across Canada.

Doctors like Omar El Khalfawy said expanding insurance coverage is essential to improving quality of life. “Trikafta has reduced emergency department visits by 20 percent,” he says.

Ms. McEwan thanked the government for fully covering drug treatment for her, adding that expanded coverage would help many Saskatchewan families like hers.
