MMDA to review earthquake response policy

MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) plans to update its nearly decade-old policy in response to a strong earthquake that could shake Metro Manila.

The MMDA and the National Capital Region Unit of the Office of Civil Defense held a meeting that discussed the Oplan Metro Yakal Plus, or Metro Manila Earthquake Contingency Plan, according to a statement issued by the MMDA last Friday.

MMDA – Public Safety Division Chief Crisanto Saroka Jr. said the agency will also review the Metropolitan Manila Earthquake Impact Mitigation Study, which is included in Oplan Metro Yakal Plus, to include risk assessment in the event of a tsunami hitting the city.

The MMDA did not reveal further details of the meeting, which it posted photos of on its Facebook page.

Created in 2015, Oplan Metro Yakal Plus is a “Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Council response tool based on the movement of the West Valley Fault of magnitude 7.2 with a magnitude 8 earthquake,” according to the document available on the MMDA website.

The forecasts presented by the study, which divided the capital, Manila, into four quadrants, indicate that an earthquake of this strength could kill more than 31,000 people.
