Following the earthquake on the night of July 18 in Junin, Peru, that left at least five people dead, a statue of the Virgin Mary remained intact even as the roof and part of the facade of St. James the Apostle Parish Church collapsed.

Speaking from the scene, Father Henry Diaz described the extensive damage to the church, the RPP’s Rotafono reported.

The priest recounted, “A large part of the church’s nave collapsed. You can see large cracks everywhere and the roof tiles disintegrated. The high altar collapsed under the rubble. The statue of the Virgin Mary is still intact.”

Father Diaz noted, “The altars of the Regency era were severely damaged. The church tower appears to be leaning slightly backwards and to the right.”

The priest called on the Ministry of Culture and the authorities who visited the area affected by the earthquake to help rebuild the church.

He also noted that restoring the church could cost more than 7 million soles ($2.06 million) and take about a year to complete.

The bishops of Peru offered prayers and expressed their solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that struck on the night of July 18, killing at least five people, injuring more than 20 and leaving hundreds affected.

The quake was recorded around 9 p.m., and its epicenter was in Chungos Bajo, Chupaca Province, Junin Region, in the Central Andes of Peru, 193 miles east of Lima, according to the National Institute of Civil Defense.

As a result of the earthquake, the historic Kani Cross, built in 1534 and located in the main square of Chungus Bago, one of the oldest religious monuments in the region, also collapsed.
