Woman walks 120 miles for brain tumor charity

A Dover woman walked 120 miles in 28 days to raise money for a charity in memory of a friend diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Former NHS worker Joe Rees took part in charity Brain Tumor Research's November 99 Mile Challenge and achieved his goal.

Jo, who is a full-time carer for her parents, dedicated the walk to a school friend who is awaiting surgery for a non-cancerous brain tumor.

In 2021, she was diagnosed with acoustic neuroma, which can cause problems with hearing and balance.

Mr. Lee said: Joe said: “It’s heartbreaking to see the physical effects that brain tumors have on people.

“It’s especially heartbreaking when people your age are also being diagnosed.”

An avid walker, she said her family was already affected by brain cancer, and a relative passed away after years of treatment and surgery.

Ms Leeds raised £700 for brain tumor research this year, taking part in challenges held in May and August.

The charity is calling on the government to commit £35 million a year to research to improve brain tumor survival rates.
