Opposition solons demand clemency for Veloso
Opposition lawmakers filed a resolution Wednesday urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to grant clemency to Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipina convicted and sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking, before her planned return to the Philippines.
The resolution calls on the House of Representatives to enter into negotiations with the president on the repatriation of Velosos. Her supporters, Reps. Arlene Brosas, France Castro and Raoul Manuel, said it was high time to grant Veloso an absolute pardon, consistent with her supporters' belief that she was a victim of her situation, as President Marcos had previously acknowledged this.
Mary Jane has already suffered enough by being deprived of her liberty for 14 years and not seeing her children grow up, the resolution states. The granting of clemency to Mary Jane was a long time coming given that she was a victim of human trafficking and not a drug mule.
Veloso's parents, who are expected to visit him in Indonesia next week before he is repatriated to the Philippines this month, were present during the filing.
The 39-year-old migrant worker from Cabanutan, Nueva Ecija, was arrested and sentenced to death in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2010 after authorities discovered 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her suitcase.
Veloso was scheduled to be executed by firing squad in April 2015, but her execution was suspended at the last minute after the intervention of President Benigno Aquino III.
Aquino's appeal to then-Indonesian President Joko Widodo allowed Veloso to be spared so she could testify against her recruiters, including her god sister Maria Kristina Sergio, who was involved in a ring international drug dealer and allegedly tricked Veloso into transporting drugs.
Veloso will serve the remainder of her sentence in the Philippines and is likely to receive an executive pardon.
The Indonesian government said it would defer to the Philippines if it decided to grant Veloso a pardon.
The Velosos case, which sparked international outcry, has become a symbol of resilience and the fight against human and drug trafficking. She expressed joy over her imminent repatriation to the Philippines after 14 long years behind bars.
