Experts warn of stronger earthquakes on the Noto Peninsula

A group of experts commissioned by the government warned that more strong earthquakes accompanied by tsunami waves could hit the Noto Peninsula area, where a 7.6-magnitude earthquake occurred on January 1 this year.

The 6.6-magnitude quake that struck off the peninsula's western coast on Nov. 26 was the second largest to hit the region in the years since December 2020, when seismic activities became active there, said Naoshi Hirata, head of the Earthquake Research Committee. He said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Hirata said he had “never encountered” a situation where seismic activity has been active for four years or more, and an earthquake of magnitude 6 or greater occurs approximately every six months.

Seismic activities in the area apparently became active because deep fluid flow to the surface caused small faults to move easily. Meanwhile, the January 1 earthquake was caused by long and large faults, spreading the zone of seismic activity over a distance of about 150 kilometers.

There is a fault near where the November earthquake occurred, according to a map the commission released in August. Hirata said there was no data to show that the fault had moved. But he added that unidentified faults may have moved.

The January 1 earthquake caused widespread changes in the Earth's crust, making it difficult to detect fluid flow to the surface.

“It is impossible to determine when the series of seismic activities will end,” Hirata said. “Earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher may occur intermittently for months or years.”
