The World Bank approves 0 million to support the recovery of the agricultural sector in areas affected by the earthquake in Türkiye

Washington, December 11, 2024 – The World Bank Board of Executive Directors today approved $250 million in financing for Turkey to support resilient recovery of the agriculture sector in areas devastated by the February 2023 earthquakes.

The Agricultural Sector Recovery Project in Turkey's earthquake-affected provinces will help farms and agricultural enterprises in the country's Fertile Crescent region recover from severe damage caused by earthquakes while enhancing resilience to natural disasters, including disasters caused by climate change.

Project activities include all 11 provinces directly affected by the 2023 earthquakes, as well as neighboring targeted areas. It is estimated that 25% of the total cultivated land in the affected provinces was negatively affected. Livestock farmers faced severe setbacks, including direct losses from animal deaths and reduced production capacity due to the urgent need to sell livestock to meet basic needs.

It is estimated that economic disruptions to the agriculture sector caused by the earthquakes exceeded $5 billion, while damage to agriculture-related infrastructure was estimated at $1.3 billion. In addition, equipment, machinery, storage facilities and irrigation systems on the farm sustained significant damage.

“Moreover, large areas in these provinces are vulnerable to arid conditions and desertification, where climate change is expected to pose an increasing threat to agricultural production and livelihoods,” said Luz Peraña Díaz, World Bank Representative. Recovery efforts must go hand in hand with strengthening capacity To persevere.” Project team leader. “This process not only addresses economic recovery, but also strengthens the agricultural sector’s ability to withstand future shocks, including those caused by climate change.”

In the immediate aftermath of the February 6, 2023 earthquakes, the World Bank quickly mobilized technical expertise in assessing damage and financing post-reconstruction needs. Today's approval by the Bank of the agricultural sector recovery project in earthquake-affected areas in Turkey reinforces the Bank's ongoing commitment to rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and advancing economic recovery in earthquake-affected areas in Turkey.
