Israel bombed a city in northwestern Syria with air strikes described as the “heaviest strikes” in the region in more than a decade.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said nighttime strikes on “surface-to-surface missile depots” caused explosions so large that they amounted to a 3.0-magnitude earthquake on nearby seismic sensors.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that “Israeli warplanes launched strikes” on an ammunition depot near the city of Tartous in an attempt to destroy the weapons stockpile.

She said that Sunday night's explosion was “the most violent strikes in the Syrian coastal region since the strikes began in 2012.”

Tartous has previously been used as a naval base and ammunition depot and is home to one of two Russian military bases in Syria.

The Israeli military has claimed that its strikes on Syria following the fall of the Assad regime are aimed at preventing the brutal dictator's military infrastructure and equipment from “falling into the hands of terrorists.”

Many of the rebels who have taken control of the country have links to or are members of jihadist organizations.

Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, said that his country's military activity is “limited and temporary,” adding that the strikes are launched based on immediate threats.

He added: “Israel does not interfere in the internal Syrian conflict.”

There were reports of Israeli tanks “less than 20 miles” from Damascus, with Israeli forces entering Syria for the first time in half a century.
