Trump joins Elon Musk in opposing House government funding bill

President-elect Donald Trump came out against a Republican-backed government funding bill Wednesday, siding with Elon Musk's crusade against the package and increasing the chances of a government shutdown.

Trump opposes upholding the resolution introduced by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, according to a source familiar with the president-elect's thinking, who was granted anonymity to describe private conversations.

The source confirmed that Trump told a Fox News host that he was “totally against” CR.

Later Wednesday afternoon, Vice President-elect and Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, released a joint statement from him and Trump saying politicians should “pass a simplified bill” that doesn't give Democrats “whatever they want”.

“Republicans want to support our farmers, fund disaster relief, and set our country up for success in 2025. The only way to do that is to pass a temporary funding bill WITHOUT DEMOCRATIC GIFTS combined with an increase in debt ceiling”, we can read in the press release. statement released by Vance on X.

“Everything else is a betrayal of our country,” their statement read.

Their opposition adds considerable weight to Musk's ongoing efforts throughout the day to defeat the 1,547-page bill, which he says is loaded with wasteful spending.

If there is no legislation passed by the House and Senate and signed by the president to fund the government after Friday evening, the federal government would begin enacting a partial shutdown that could include employee furloughs.

Musk, whom Trump chose to co-lead an advisory group aimed at reducing alleged government waste, does not appear concerned about the prospect of a government shutdown a week before Christmas.

“'Shutting down' the government (which doesn't actually shut down critical functions) is infinitely better than passing a horrible bill,” Musk wrote in one of dozens of X-rated posts attacking CR.

In another post, Musk claimed that “no bill should be passed” by Congress before Trump takes office on January 20.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers have sided with Musk, potentially forcing Johnson, R-La., to pass the resolution using a process known as a “suspend” of the traditional House rules process.

Passing suspended bills requires the bill to gain the support of two-thirds of the House, but bypasses other procedural steps.

Democrats are expected to join Republicans in passing the suspended bill, and as of Wednesday morning, passing a CR suspension appeared to be the most likely path to funding the government.

Johnson said Wednesday morning that he texted overnight with Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy about the bill.

“They understand the situation. They said, 'This is not directed at you, Mr. President, but we don't like this spending.' I said, 'Guess what, guys, me neither,'” Johnson told “Fox & Friends.”

But “we have to get this done,” Johnson told Musk and Ramaswamy, because “by doing this we clear the deck” so Trump can implement his agenda.

The rebellion within its ranks against the CR could threaten Johnson's chances of being elected Speaker of the House again on January 3, when he will need the support of the majority of the entire House to reclaim the gavel.

Johnson became president in October 2023, following the GOP ouster of former Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. While Johnson won his party's nomination to continue serving as speaker, several House Republicans declined Wednesday to say whether they would support him for the role when the next Congress meets with an even slimmer Republican majority .

Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, chairman of the Republican study committee, said “we'll see what happens” when asked if he would vote for Johnson for president, Punchbowl News reported.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said he would vote for someone else, Punchbowl reported.

The short-term funding bill, which would keep the government open until mid-March, was unveiled Tuesday evening, just days before federal funding expired.

The bill includes more than $100 billion in disaster relief funding, intended to address the devastating hurricanes that ravaged states like Florida and North Carolina earlier this year.

President Joe Biden has not specifically weighed in on the bill. Wednesday marked the 52nd anniversary of the deaths of his first wife and infant daughter in a car crash in 1972. Biden spent the day with family, attending a church service and honoring their memory.
