Japan will ease visa application requirements for Chinese visitors, Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said on Wednesday, hoping to facilitate tourism and business activities between the neighboring countries.

The plan was conveyed to China by Iwaya during a meeting in Beijing to discuss cultural exchanges between the two countries and follows China's resumption in late November of its visa waiver agreement for Japanese visitors to short-term, suspended following the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier in the day, Iwaya told reporters that China's top diplomat Wang Yi had agreed to visit Japan as early as possible next year to hold a high-level bilateral economic dialogue.

Iwaya also said Japan had confirmed the existence of a new buoy in its exclusive economic zone off Okinawa Prefecture, believed to have been installed by China, and demanded its immediate removal.

The two diplomats reaffirmed the implementation of an agreement reached in September to gradually lift the ban on Chinese imports of Japanese seafood following the release into the sea of ​​treated radioactive wastewater from the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima Daiichi, according to Iwaya.
