Temperatures could fall as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius this weekend as the Met Office issued an amber warning for snowfall across the UK on Sunday.

The steep drop in temperatures is expected to continue today, with Scotland facing the coldest temperatures of any snow-covered region – minus 10 degrees.

Now the Met Office has extended its yellow snow and ice warning, which previously covered Scotland and northern England, to areas further south beyond London.

Major cities will also face sub-zero temperatures. London could potentially drop to -5C, Glasgow to -6C and Birmingham and Manchester to -7C.

Snow is expected to start in northern Scotland, with freeze warnings also expected to be in place across northern England.

More snow is expected to fall from Saturday, with around 5cm expected to fall in the Midlands, Wales and northern England.

Heavier snow could fall in the higher reaches of the Pennines, with 20-30cm expected.

Extreme weather conditions have already affected Scotland, with Edinburgh's Hogmanee celebrations, including street parties and fireworks, canceled due to safety concerns.

England's Health and Safety Executive has issued a 72-hour yellow flu alert from 9am on Wednesday until at least Saturday, warning of a “significant impact” on health and social care services across the country.

Authorities have warned that severe weather could lead to an increase in deaths among the elderly and people with underlying health conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology's yellow warning indicates that extreme weather conditions could cause disruption to rural communities, resulting in potential power outages and disruptions to mobile phone services across the affected region.

Travel disruptions are expected across rail, road and air services during the warning period.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan explained that a blanket warning had been issued as a “caution” and a more specific update was expected later this week.
