An earthquake shakes homes, causing a “loud boom and roar” in Oban

An earthquake was recorded in parts of Scotland on Sunday evening, with some residents saying they felt their entire home shake.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has confirmed that seismic activity was recorded in Kinloch on 5 January at around 8.44pm, with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale.

The impact was said to be felt by the people of Oban, Kilchwan, Strontian, Mull, Lismore and many villages surrounding the area.

BGS said it had received reports of people feeling “like a tank was passing the house” with “extremely loud bangs and rumbles” while windows and doors shook.

One resident reported that they “felt the entire house shaking” as seismic activity recorded a depth of 13 km.

The epicenter of the earthquake was said to be about 30 kilometers from the surrounding villages.
