Two small earthquakes shake Virginia including some reported in Front Royal

Two small earthquakes struck central Virginia on January 13 and 14, with some reports felt in Front Royal.

Gov. Youngkin acknowledged on social media on January 14 that his team was aware of a 2.8 magnitude earthquake that had struck central Virginia.

The governor's team is working with local government in the affected areas to assess the impact.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first earthquake occurred just before 5:30 pm on January 14.

The epicenter of the 2.8 earthquake was recorded about a mile north of Windham, and about 6 miles north of Short Pump Virginia.

The quake occurred less than 10 miles from Glen Allen.

Interactive maps indicate the quake was felt by about 500 people, according to ABC affiliate WJLA.

Some of the earthquake's impact could be felt as far north as Front Royal and Fairfax County according to WTOP.

Some of the most affected areas were from Powhatan County to Richmond areas according to the USGS.

At the time of issuing the last report, there were no recorded damages or injuries.

Then on January 15, the USGS reported that at approximately 2:50 a.m. a 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck the same area.

The USGS reports that earthquakes have been recorded in Virginia since 1774 and are felt at least once every year or two.

The most significant earthquake was the August 2011 magnitude 5.8 earthquake that struck Mineral Virginia.

This earthquake was felt from the Carolinas to Canada and caused some damage, but no casualties were reported.
