MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A 7.8-magnitude earthquake centered offshore shook part of the southern Philippines early Monday, causing damage in a major port city, knocking out power and triggering a 1-meter (3-foot) tsunami along nearby coasts, officials said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. asked people to immediately head to higher ground in tsunami-prone Philippine areas, and Indonesian and Malaysian authorities also issued warnings for nearby coastal areas.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, and it was unclear whether people were trapped or injured in the collapse of at least one small building in General Santos, a tuna-industry city of more than 700,000 that is also a commercial center in the south.

The strongest earthquake to hit the Philippines this year was centered offshore about 13 kilometers (8 miles) southwest of General Santos, and was caused by movement in the Cotabato Trench at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The institute’s director, Teresito Bakulkul, said the earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m.

“It’s a big earthquake and we expect damage, and some buildings have already been damaged based on the videos we’ve seen,” Bakulkul told the Associated Press.

DZRH radio station in Manila reported that the small commercial building in which its regional branch was located partially collapsed and employees rushed to the ground floor without casualties.

It was not clear whether there were other people trapped under the rubble of the four-story administrative building due to the earthquake that occurred before work hours.

Debris also fell from other buildings, hitting tricycle taxis parked below.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves up to three meters high were likely to occur on some coasts of the Philippines. Waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) high are possible on some coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Bakulkul said that waves measuring one meter high were detected in Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani provinces through land-based tsunami monitoring stations. He added that smaller waves were detected in at least one other province.

Marcos told people in the provinces affected by the quake: “Please heed the tsunami warning. Move to higher ground now. Don’t wait. Your lives are more important than anything you leave behind.”

“The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind,” Marcos said, adding that disaster response agencies are ready to respond.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a tsunami warning in the state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. Sabah is located a short boat ride from the south of the Philippines. A tsunami measuring 83 cm (2.7 ft) high was measured off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Smaller sea changes are possible in Taiwan, Japan, Papua New Guinea and several island nations and territories in the Western Pacific. The warning for Guam was lifted about two hours after the quake and there was no threat to Hawaii, PTWC said.

Aftershocks measuring 6.5 magnitude followed, the US Geological Survey said. The original earthquake was measured at a depth of 55 kilometers (34 miles). Variations in measurements by different agencies are common in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake.

The Philippines, one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries, is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the ocean. The archipelago is also hit by about 20 hurricanes and tropical storms every year.
