Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain would provide mobile air defense systems and strengthen maritime cooperation with Ukraine.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to work with Ukraine and its allies to ensure strong security for Kiev if a ceasefire is negotiated with Russia, days before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House.

Starmer met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kiev on Thursday and offered more support through a 100-year partnership deal.

Starmer, who was visiting Ukraine for the first time since becoming prime minister in July, welcomed relations between the two countries as closer than ever.

Trump, who takes office on Monday, has frequently promised to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine. He announced a proposal that would include ceding large parts of Ukraine to Russia.

Prime Minister Starmer said any deal to end the war must guarantee Ukraine's security and independence.

Zelenskyy recently urged Western countries not to give up the ball and maintain long-term military support for Ukraine. He hailed Thursday's deal as truly historic.

Britain has been one of Ukraine's biggest military backers, pledging 12.8 billion pounds ($16 billion) in military and civilian support since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The 100-year agreement, which covers a range of areas including defence, energy and trade, reflects the enormous affection that exists between the two countries, Starmer told reporters at a joint press conference in Kiev.

Under the agreement, London and Kiev committed to deepening defense cooperation, revitalizing Ukraine's defense industry and recognizing Ukraine as a future NATO ally.

Prime Minister Starmer said the government would provide mobile air defense systems and strengthen maritime cooperation through a new security framework in the Baltic, Black and Azov seas.

The various treaties that form part of the 100-year agreement are expected to be submitted to the British Parliament in the coming weeks.

The British Prime Minister said in a statement ahead of his meeting with Zelenskyy that the strength of our long-standing friendship cannot be underestimated.

He noted the importance of supporting Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression and rebuild an independent future.

Starmer added that this partnership is creating a strong economy that serves the British people, a safe country that protects Britain's interests at home and abroad, and a prosperous society.
