Centuries-old nunnery destroyed by 80% Dingri earthquake in Tibet

(TibetanReview.net, January 16'25) – Chinese state media has confirmed that a centuries-old nunnery has been 80% destroyed and that one of the monasteries has suffered structural damage in the town of Dramtso, Dingri Province as a result of the devastating earthquake that occurred on the morning of January 7.

The 600-year-old Tsugu (Zingkar) Chudi Monastery and Zombo Monastery (Dzongpop Nunnery) suffered extensive structural damage, China's official website chinadaily.com.cn reported on January 16.

Most of the housing in Zombo Monastery collapsed, making it difficult for search and rescue personnel to track intermittent cries for help, the report said. Rescuers were said to have used mobile phones to pinpoint the exact location of the buried individuals and manually dug under the rubble for four hours.

The report quoted Tashi Drolma, a government official in the monastery, as confirming that although more than 80% of the monastery’s buildings collapsed, there were no casualties.

“We will start rebuilding the monastery,” she said.

Although the report did not mention the extent of damage and other details at the Tsugu Chudi Monastery, it quoted 53-year-old Ngakwang Yeontan, one of its 16 monks, as saying: “Houses were shaking violently… scriptures, books and quilts.” . It fell from the shelves and the walls collapsed. She quickly ran outside to avoid getting hurt.

The report stated that Goring (or Jurong) village was among the most affected areas, but did not mention anything about casualties, injuries and damage. She only said: “By 11 a.m. on January 7, just two hours after the earthquake, the first external support team arrived. On the first day, more than 1,000 rescuers arrived in this village of about 200 people, while More than 12,000 responders deployed across the region.

China's online Tibet News Service eng.tibet.cn reported earlier on January 14 that an official of Zingkar Choedi Monastery named Thubten lost four members of his family in Jurong Village to the earthquake, from which only the elderly couple survived.

This report also stated that Dzongphub Nunnery is a district-level protected cultural heritage site and Zingkar Choede Monastery is a district-level protected site.
