Kurds reject Turkish claims that drones are linked to Iran as propaganda

Kurds reject Turkish claims that drones are linked to Iran as propaganda

“The Kurds have not acquired drones from Iran,” a Kurdish military official said Wednesday in a video call with The Jerusalem Post. “Everything is clear[ly] Turkish propaganda.

He made the remarks in response to an article published by Yeni Safak, a conservative and Islamist Turkish newspaper, and reported by the Job, who said Kurdish forces had acquired drone capabilities from Iran.

“We have not acquired any drone capabilities from the Iranians,” the official said. “Our drone capabilities are very basic, and they are all manufactured in-house, through initiatives led by our warfighters.”

Yeni Safak is loyal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP), the official said, adding: “This media outlet clearly has an interest in distorting our image and linking us to extremist regimes and outcasts. They have failed to make progress against our fighters on the ground and are therefore trying to spread propaganda and lies about us.”

Kurdish forces controlled 30 to 35 percent of Syrian territory, the official said, adding that this region was the safest in the country.

“Our very existence as an autonomous zone constitutes an obstacle to Erdogan's expansionist agenda, which dreams of redrawing the Middle East according to the map of the Ottoman Empire,” he said.

“We are being attacked again today, even as we speak, even though we ourselves are Syrian,” he added. “Despite this, so far they have failed to expand east of the Euphrates, which is why they have naturally turned to media warfare. »

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) denounced and rejected the accusations contained in Yeni Safak's article.

“The drones are the product of the pure personal experience of the people of northern and eastern Syria,” the SDF said on its social media accounts. “Turkish media affiliated with the Turkish government's policy of genocide against the peoples of the region are grappling with a crisis of fake news fabrication… This news [items] are entirely false and blatantly fabricated by the Turkish media. Their aim is to harm our forces and our people and to create an atmosphere hostile to the cause of the people of northern and eastern Syria. »

Türkiye and Kurds: a historic enmity

There is historical enmity between the Turkish state and the Kurdish minority over ethnic tensions and the question of Kurdish independence. The Kurdish ethnic minority constitutes approximately 15-20% of Turkey's population, while millions of Kurds reside in Syria, Iran and Iraq.

The Kurdistan region, in northern Iraq, is semi-autonomous and recognized by Western powers.

Turkish forces have for years launched attacks on Kurdish population centers in Syria, claiming they are “led by terrorists” who support a local Kurdish organization in Turkey, the PKK, which Ankara considers a terrorist group.

In this context, at least since 2016, the Turkish army has occupied large swathes of territory in northern Syria, some of which are traditionally Kurdish areas.

With the consolidation of the new regime in Damascus, Syrian Kurds fear further repercussions from Turkish-backed forces.

“Turkey is like Iran,” the official said. “They are both led by extremist religious regimes. Once Iranian influence in Syria collapsed with the Assad regime, Turkey was free to take its place. They hate the Kurds and cannot or will not stop their incitement to hatred against us.”

The official expressed concern about the new regime's ties to Turkey.

“The Kurds constitute an important part of Turkish society,” he said.

“There are around four million Kurds in Istanbul alone and many more in many Turkish cities. But we must not forget that many of them were ethnically cleansed by the Turkish army in their old historic towns in eastern Turkey… In Syria too, our autonomy constitutes an obstacle to their expansion.”

Asked if he was optimistic about the new regime and its ties to the Kurdish minority, the official responded with a bitter smile: “We appreciate the attempts of the international community to ensure a stable and democratic future for Syria and all its citizens, and we certainly hope that this would lead to a state for all its citizens, with a constitution and equal rights for all. But right now we are in a very dangerous situation.

“The current government in Damascus is not extending its control to the whole of Syria, nor has it succeeded in taking control of all the weapons of the former regime,” he added . “Many extremist groups are being created, [and] many crimes were committed against minorities and women. We are seeing more and more Islamist involvement in universities and others.”

The chaotic situation could be an indication of what could come, including a regrouping of ISIS and its violent campaigns against minorities, the official said.

Regarding Israel, the official said he had to remain anonymous “due to the circumstances.”

Nevertheless, he said: “It is an honor to appear in your media. The Jewish people are an ancient nation in our region. They have played an important role since the days of Abraham. They had prophets and, later, philosophers, historicists and scientists. The Jewish people can achieve great things in our region and play an important role in maintaining peace and stability in our region.

“Unfortunately, the current political outlook makes it difficult for us to unite and cooperate openly,” the official said.

“As for the State of Israel, it is a strong country with many capabilities – political, economic, military – and it can contribute to ending terrorism and establishing lasting peace in the region. We want Israel and the Jewish people to play this important role.
