Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been convicted of corruption in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust affair and sentenced to 14 and seven years in prison respectively.

Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the anti-graft court announced the verdict which had been postponed three times for different reasons, the last time on January 13, news agency PTI reported.

The verdict in this case is the largest in terms of financial wrongdoing against Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 in Rawalpindi.

The former cricket star, 72, had been charged that he and his wife were offered land by a property developer during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022 in exchange for illegal favors.

Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, had pleaded not guilty. The announcement of the verdict was delayed three times, most recently on Monday, due to negotiations between the government and Khan's party.

Bushra Bibi, who is in her 40s and was out on bail, was taken into custody after also being found guilty in the case, Geo News reported.

Pending a detailed decision, it is important to note that the Al Qadir Trust case against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi lacks solid foundation and is doomed to failure, said the foreign media wing of the Pakistan Tehreek-e party -Insaf of Khan in a press release.

The verdict marks the biggest setback for Khan and his party since their surprisingly strong showing in the 2024 general election, when their candidates – forced to run as independents – won the most seats, but fell short. the majority needed to form a government.

Imprisoned since August 2023, Khan faces dozens of cases ranging from accusations of corruption and abuse of power to inciting violence against the state after being removed from office in a vote of confidence parliamentary in April 2022.

He was either acquitted or had his sentence suspended in most cases, except for one case for inciting supporters to ransack military installations to protest his arrest on May 9, 2023.

His supporters have led several violent protest rallies since the May 9 incidents.

He was tried in a prison for security reasons.
