Health officials have warned of possible measles exposure in W.Va.
CHARLSON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — The West Virginia Department of Public Health believes that some West Virginians may have been exposed to measles after a Maryland resident who was infected with the disease landed at Washington Dulles International Airport on March 5.
Officials say the site of the potential exposure site is located at terminal A at the airport and is being carried to the baggage request area from 4pm to 9pm with transport to the main terminal.
Health Ministry officials also say it's best to see the symptoms until March 26th if you think you were in the area or you might have been exposed.
The Ministry of Health said the first stage of symptoms often leads to a fever that exceeds 101 degrees, runny nose, cough and watery red eyes. Officials said these symptoms could appear 7-14 days after exposure.
After symptoms began, authorities said three to five days later the rash could appear on the face and spread to the rest of the body. “People with measles can be transmitted from four days before the rash appears, up to four days after the rash appears,” according to a release from the Ministry of Health.
Kanawwa County Health Officer Dr. Stephen Echenaur said measles spread across several states adjacent to West Virginia shows just how infectious the disease is.
“This is because a room with 10 people is likely to spread easily into the air as nine out of 10 people are likely to get sick. Even after a person leaves the room, measles can only remain in the air and can potentially spread for hours later.”
Echenaur said West Virginia has the highest vaccination rate in the country, and that is the only way to prevent it from happening.
“So it's really important not to buy unscientific data that says that the disease can be treated with vitamin A. In fact, it doesn't work for measles treatment or prevention.”
He said the changes to current requirements for the vaccine make cases more likely here.
“As you relax vaccination laws, as we saw in other states, the population is more susceptible to measles outbreaks.”
Dr. Echenaur said children and pregnant women are at risk of the worst effects when catching measles without protection.
“It's really important to protect women from staining measles, as measles can cause irreparable damage to the fetus.”
Echenaur says the disease is a little too close to comfort and the use of treatments such as cod liver oil, vitamin A and dietary changes will not cure the disease.
