Pablo Fustec, a dual citizen of France and Mexico, died last month after jumping into a hot spring in a failed attempt to save Sasha, one of his dogs. He adopted the Great Dane in black and white after finding him on a street in Mexico City after an earthquake that killed several hundred people in the country in September 2017.

“It is an extremist act,” said Sister Sophie Fustik, who is in Paris. But she said, “His dogs were like his little ones” and he would do the same with me or anyone else.

Fustec, who brought his ashes to France for his funeral by his partner, Jonathan Ramos, lived in Mexico for ten years. The 32-year-old had a background in theater and architecture, and planned a project to teach work skills to ex-convicts so that they could successfully re-enter society.

On June 13, Fustec and Ramos were hanging out with their three dogs at Zinapécuaro in Michoacan, west of Mexico City. Sasha fell in the spring and Fustec jumped behind the male dog, only realizing that he was seriously injured after the climb, according to his sister.

Sasha died at once. Sophie Fustec said Ramos carried Fustec on his back for 40 minutes until we managed to find an ambulance. Her brother suffered burns of more than 70 percent of his body in addition to septic shock, and was eventually transferred to a hospital in Mexico City, where family and friends launched a blood donation drive ahead of the expected surgeries.

Ramos visited the Fustec room, but was not allowed into it due to tighter restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus. Faustk said 2020 was a “difficult” year, referring to the spread of the epidemic and the police killing of George Floyd in the United States.

But she said her brother had committed an unselfish act that “gave me hope for the future.”
