“Regime Change” Book on President Trump’s Second Term: Interview with Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan
When Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan met with President Trump in the Oval Office earlier this year to interview him for their new book, Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, he eagerly produced a two-page letter from a supporter he described as a historian. The premise of the letter was extraordinary: Trump was more powerful than some of history’s most influential figures, including Napoleon, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler.
The author of the letter was not actually a historian. He was a golf caddy. But Trump’s obvious pride in the comparison told the two New York Times reporters something about what motivates his second presidency.
“Trump was obviously happy to be in their company,” Swan told Vanity Fair. “He wants to be a great man in history.”
Based on more than 1,000 interviews and three years of reporting, Regime Change paints a gripping and deeply disturbing picture of a chaotic period during which Trump governed with impressive power and unprecedented impunity. This is a president, as the authors put it, who has become “a walking moral hazard, rarely grappling with the costs or consequences of his risk-taking and rule-breaking.”
Published 17 months into Trump’s second term, Regime Change lifts the veil on Trump’s hostile takeover of Washington. There are details of her special existence in the White House residence and portraits of the personalities around her, like Natalie Harp, the devoted aide who writes “adoration letters” to Trump that she leaves in his “private spaces,” including one declaring: “You are all that matters to me.”
The book, which appears today, has already caused concern within the White House. Trump is furious over his revelations, and a parlor game over who leaked what has been underway in Washington since excerpts first appeared in the Times. Some of them contained verbatim records of highly sensitive meetings between senior officials in the situation room.
Haberman and Swan spoke with Vanity Fair about their “grueling” reporting process, how writing the book almost killed them, and what they learned through it all about the extraordinary nature of Trump’s second presidency. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Vanity Fair: We’re just over a year away from Trump’s second term. Tell us why you decided to write a book so early in this administration.
Jonathan Swan: Well, it became apparent to us early on that we were covering, first of all, a presidency that was nothing like the first term, basically unrecognizable in many ways. And second, it had many elements that made it the most important presidency of our lifetimes. And when you’re tackling something that seems as high stakes and as important and urgent as what we’re covering, it’s not something you want to sit on. We are both journalists. We both want to reveal it. Our entire job is to get information out to the public. So, without shame, I think this book is a pretty extraordinary effort at real-time reporting. It covers the first 14 months of the administration. It is published in month 17. You understand publishing. It’s something of a publishing miracle to achieve this – and it’s thanks to Simon & Schuster for doing it.
