The Pew Research Center conducts research to help the public, media, and policymakers understand important topics. We have been studying the global vision of the United States for more than two decades. We conducted this study to understand how people in other countries perceive the United States and Trump, now in the second year of his second administration.

How did we do this?

We surveyed 42,151 people in 36 countries: Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The interviews were conducted from February 8 to May 13, 2026. We designed the surveys to be able to speak to the opinions of the adult population in each country. Here are the survey questions used for this report, along with the survey responses and methodology.

Across 36 countries, a median of 23% of adults have confidence in U.S. President Donald Trump’s ability to make the right decisions about world affairs.

Trust in Trump is lower than trust in French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Among the leaders surveyed, only Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received lower marks.

These findings come from a new Pew Research Center survey of 42,151 adults in 36 countries, conducted from February 8 to May 13, 2026. They are part of a larger report on the worldview of the United States and its president.

In what areas do people have a more positive view of Trump than other leaders?

Colombia, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines stand out as four countries where views of Trump are more positive than those of other leaders we asked about.

In Colombia, 43% trust Trump – higher than the 37% who trust Macron and the third or less who trust other leaders. In Hungary, 44% of respondents trust Trump, compared with about a third or less who say the same about Macron, Xi or Putin. Trust in Netanyahu and Zelensky is even lower. In Israel, 66% trust Trump, while only a third or less trust other leaders. (We did not ask about trust in Netanyahu.) In the Philippines, 68% trust Trump, while 61% trust Macron and about half or more trust other leaders.

In other countries, including several middle-income countries (as defined by World Bank lending groups) such as Argentina, Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria and Peru, Trump is among the highest-rated leaders. In most of these countries, trust in Trump is similar to trust in Xi or Macron.

Where do people have more negative views of Trump than other leaders?

Trump is either the leader with the lowest trust rating or tied for the lowest in many countries. This is the case, for example, among the southern and northern neighbors of the United States:

In Mexico, 11% trust Trump, compared to 18% trust Netanyahu. About three in ten people trust Putin and Xi. Canadians have equally low levels of trust in Putin (18%), Trump (20%) and Netanyahu (23%) and relatively more confident in Xi (35%), Macron (59%) and Zelensky (65%).

In three European countries – France, Germany and Greece – trust ratings for Trump are among the lowest among leaders surveyed, often tied with Putin, Netanyahu or both. For example, 16% of Germans trust Trump and similar proportions say the same about Putin (15%) and Netanyahu (15%), a stark contrast to the 72% of Germans who trust Macron.

Trump tends to receive particularly low marks compared to other leaders from majority-Muslim audiences surveyed. Among Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, for example, only 4 percent trust Trump — a figure similar to the 2 percent who say the same about Netanyahu, but far lower than the roughly four in ten who trust Putin and Xi. Also in Malaysia, Trump shares the lowest rating with Netanyahu.
