Turkey celebrates the twenty-first anniversary of the Marmara earthquake

KOCAELI / SAKARYA, Turkey

On Monday, Turkey celebrated the 21st anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey’s Marmara region in 1999, which killed nearly 17,000 people on August 17.

According to information obtained by Anadolu Agency, the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred at 3.02 in the morning [0002GMT] It lasted for 45 seconds, hitting the provinces of Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya and Yalova.

According to the 2010 Parliamentary Investigation Commission report, 17,480 people were killed in the earthquake and about 45,000 were injured.

Nearly 16 million people were affected by the earthquake, and nearly 200,000 people were displaced.

A total of 66,441 houses and 10,901 workplaces collapsed, while 285,111 houses and 42,902 workplaces were damaged.

Among the earthquakes that occurred between 1900 and 2009, the Marmara earthquake caused the sixth largest economic loss – estimated at $ 20 billion – according to the Emergency Events Database website.

The effects of the earthquake, which was described as a “catastrophe of the century”, were dissipated by the various efforts made during the past years.

Several ministries, Turkey’s Housing Development Administration (TOKI) and other institutions have implemented urban transformation projects in the affected areas.

Thousands of new homes have been built by TOKI, municipalities and the private sector in line with anti-earthquake regulations.

Slightly damaged buildings, especially schools and hospitals, were strengthened by the earthquakes.

Many provinces that bore the brunt of the earthquake are now industrial hubs thanks to political shifts in the right direction.

Kocaeli, which plays an important role in the Turkish manufacturing industry, has significantly increased its exports in the last 21 years after the earthquake.

Sakarya, which suffered significant loss due to the earthquake, has achieved remarkable success in both urban transformation and industrial movement. Its economy has grown 33 times since the earthquake.
