At least 32 killed and 700 injured in two major earthquakes in VenezuelaExBulletin

At least 32 people were killed and 700 injured after two successive major earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, reducing several buildings to rubble in the nearby capital, Caracas, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, said early Thursday.

An initial earthquake occurred at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday, with a magnitude of 7.2, followed less than a minute later by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the same area, according to the US Geological Survey.

Rodriguez said the initial toll was expected to rise as rescuers and emergency workers searched through the rubble. She added that dozens of buildings collapsed in the city of La Guaira, about 30 kilometers north of Caracas.

Rodriguez called for national unity to save lives. “Together we will overcome this tragedy,” she wrote on social media.

The epicenter of the quake, which the US Geological Survey estimated was about 3 miles away, was near the town of Morón on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, about 100 miles west of Caracas.

In the wake of the devastation, President Trump said he had instructed his administration to assist Venezuela, saying the earthquakes were “of massive magnitude and left a devastating number of deaths.”

“We will be there for our new and great friends. The early reports are not good!!!” Trump wrote on social media.

The US State Department said it had mobilized a disaster assistance team and would send search and rescue teams, medical and humanitarian supplies and other resources to Venezuela.

Colombia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Chile and El Salvador also provided humanitarian aid, search and rescue missions and medical personnel, with messages of support pouring in for Venezuelans.

“When earthquakes are close together” in time, “it can be difficult to detect the exact magnitude and exact locations, especially for a second event,” because of the way signals on seismographs overlap in these cases, said Paul Earle, a seismologist with the USGS.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed flattened buildings, people running for safety, and falling debris from structural damage at Caracas’ Simón Bolívar International Airport. The airport has since been closed.

The total number of dead and wounded is not yet clear. USGS modeling of the 7.5-magnitude earthquake Wednesday evening could be in the thousands to tens of thousands, with economic losses reaching billions to tens of billions of dollars, Earle said.

“It doesn’t happen very often,” Earl said. “When they are together, it is difficult to understand what will happen.”

The stronger “double,” as the USGS calls the twin quakes, is the largest earthquake to hit Venezuela since 1900, when a 7.7-magnitude quake struck the country, according to the USGS.

About half an hour after the Venezuela earthquake, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Japan. Earlier Wednesday, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Northern California. No major damage was reported in either earthquake.

In Venezuela, large aftershocks are likely to follow in the coming days.

According to USGS projections, there is a 40% chance that an earthquake of magnitude 6 or larger will hit the same area next week, Earle said, and an “almost certain” quake of at least magnitude 5 will occur.

Previous tsunami warnings for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were withdrawn, and those warnings were not in effect as of Wednesday night.

On Wednesday evening, Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency, and said that several Venezuelan states had suffered damage. She also called for unity and urged “our residents to remain calm.”
