A 6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes near Bogo, Cebu

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred near Bogo, Cebu, in the early hours of Monday, October 13, Phivolcs said.

The monitoring agency said, in a post on social media, that the earthquake occurred at 1:06 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers.

It is tectonic in origin, with the following instrumental intensity recorded:

5th Density – Villaba Hi, Leyte Density, Asocias, Argao City, Talisay, Cebu City, Quebo; Isabelle, Leyte, Helst, Ormu 1, Orrond, Lahit; Hurtang, Sohairers

Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected.

Recent earthquakes

The quake comes two weeks after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Bogo, killing at least 74 people. This is the strongest earthquake recorded in northern Cebu.

It also comes about three days after Manai, Davao Oriental, was hit by twin earthquakes measuring 7.4 and 6.8 on Friday. The death toll rose to eight.

On Saturday, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Caguite, Surigao del Sur, while a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck Cabangan, Zambales.

With some questioning whether earthquakes are occurring more frequently, the Department of Science and Technology explained that Phivolcs actually records about 30 earthquakes per day in the Philippines, because the country has many active faults, and there have been previous instances of large earthquakes occurring in relatively quick succession.

Code red

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center has raised the status of its operations center to code red and has activated response groups to designate lead agencies to manage operations in response to the recent earthquakes, the Office of Civil Defense announced on Sunday.

“Raising the situation to the highest alert level required officers on duty from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), as well as technical personnel from DILG, DSWD, DPWH, and DOH to perform duty at the Physical Operations Center at Camp Aguinaldo.
