The death toll in the Afghanistan earthquake is rising and Taliban officials say nearly 1,000 people have been injured

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan early Monday rose to 27 people on Tuesday, with about a thousand others confirmed injured as a result of the quake, according to national health officials.

The US Geological Survey said the 6.3-magnitude quake was centered near Kholm in northern Samangan province, but the Afghan Taliban government reported damage and casualties in at least five other provinces.

Videos posted online show that the quake lasted about 20 seconds. The earthquake was so strong that it was felt in the capital, Kabul, and neighboring countries, causing panic for families early Monday morning.

Public Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said 27 people were killed, most of them in Samangan and neighboring Balkh province. Deaths were also confirmed in Baghlan, Kunduz, Sar Pol and Jawzjan provinces, with a total of 953 confirmed infections.

Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority reported that more than 500 homes were partially or completely damaged in the earthquake, leaving families at risk of immediate displacement and in dire need as temperatures drop with the onset of winter.

In Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, the earthquake caused severe damage to the famous 15th-century Blue Mosque, according to regional government spokesman Haji Zahid, who shared a video of the damage on his social media account.

Humanitarian aid organizations, many of which are suffering from recent funding cuts by the United States and other governments, have deployed teams to help facilitate the delivery of emergency health care and other essential items to those affected.

“Afghanistan faces recurring disasters – earthquakes, floods and drought, all exacerbated by the climate crisis,” Srikanta Mirsa, ActionAid Afghanistan country director, said in a statement. “At the same time, the country is suffering from a severe food crisis due to drought, economic collapse and the withdrawal of vital financing.” “One in five Afghans faces acute hunger, while millions suffer from acute malnutrition.”

Over the past two years, Afghanistan has been hit by several deadly earthquakes, including a powerful earthquake that struck the east of the country in late August, killing 2,200 people and leaving thousands of families without shelter, clean water and medical care, according to the United Nations and Afghan authorities.

The United Nations said it would need $140 million in emergency funding to help families affected by this earthquake.
