Mother Nature hits Grayson Schools hard, class continues

Grayson County, Virginia (WDBJ) –

In Grayson County, the school system is overcoming Mother Nature’s rage as well as adapting to COVID-19.

After two floods in the space of two and a half weeks at Fries School, huge chunks of the property were warned because the water left in their wake of damage in steps and sidewalks and holes in their wake.

“Without the volunteers and the fire department, we wouldn’t be able to start school on time,” said Superintendent Kelly Wilmer.

This is the third time, Wilmer said, the drug has been inundated with this badness in his five years in office. In the photos the area shared with us, the fully back car park and the front section of the school can be seen underwater from the torrential rain.

“We’re trying to reconcile a lot of things right now,” Wilmore said.

All of this comes while trying to reopen schools four days a week during the middle of the pandemic, a start already five days delayed by the earthquake.

The supervisor said, “We must keep moving forward and we must keep doing what is best for our students.”

Some of the damage from an earthquake will require a little more effort to fix, but Wilmore said it’s all cosmetic. The repaired cracks can hardly be seen anymore.

“The only area of ​​interest was the high school gym,” said Wilmore, “but we’ve got reinforcements now so it’s good to go.”

While this is happening behind the scenes, the school day continues in the COVID world. In high school, halls are divided so that traffic moves in the same direction. At Al Istiqlal Primary School, lunch ladies prepare trays for children waiting in line far away to take to the classroom.

“It was a tremendous community effort to get so many children to school according to the restrictions and guidelines that were laid out for us,” Wilmore said.

Currently, students personally go to school four days a week until we enter the fourth stage.

“We’re just moving forward, we’ve had an amazing week so far,” Wilmore said.

The supervisor said that they take everything one day at a time. The costs of the damage are still being determined.
