Donald Trump defends US war on Iran in Oval Office interview

US President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is the best president in Israel’s history during an interview with CNBC.

“They admit it,” Trump added from the Oval Office, referring to perceived Israeli views toward him.

“How a Jewish person can vote for a Democrat is beyond me,” Trump added.

The US president defended his decision to go to war against Iran in the interview, saying that “it’s not a war in itself. It’s about the denuclearization of Iran.”

“You can’t let them have nuclear weapons,” he argued, adding that the four months of the war are relatively short.

“We are respected again as a country, perhaps like never before. A year and a half ago, we were laughed at. They don’t laugh anymore,” he said, adding that the United States has “had very bad presidents.”

“You know, other presidents are not considered a strong office; even if you are president, you can only do so much,” he said. According to CNBC, he appeared to be referring to presidents of other countries.

‘No ship has reached Iran,’ Trump says

Asked about the Strait of Hormuz, the US president claimed that “no ship has managed to reach Iran,” which CNBC said suggests the US blockade of the waterway has not been violated.

“It was a wall of steel,” Trump said.

Reports from the shipping industry, however, indicate that the blockade has been repeatedly breached by an Iranian shadow fleet, CNBC said, citing Lloyd’s List, an analytics service that covers global shipping trends.

Additionally, Trump has repeatedly claimed that Iran will purchase agricultural products from the United States as part of the ceasefire agreement.

Tehran, however, refuted this assertion, according to CNBC.

“They’re not making any money, so we’re going to take some of the money and we’re going to buy them,” Trump said. “They need food. They need corn, wheat and soybeans, and we’re going to get it exclusively from our American farmers.”

Trump argued that the profits Tehran gained from easing U.S. sanctions will go toward buying food from the United States, not rebuilding Iran’s military.

However, Iran’s central bank governor, Abdolnaser Hemmati, said the deal did not include “the obligation to purchase agricultural inputs from the United States,” CNBC said, citing Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
