Concrete is dealing with earthquakes, landslides, heavy rains and flooding concerns this week

Skagit County, Washington – Be prepared for a surprise evacuation. That's the message some homeowners in the Town of Concrete are being told, as the Skagit River near the town is expected to reach major flood stage again.

This comes as landslides, earthquakes and heavy rains affected the region this week. Concrete is located at the confluence of the Baker and Skagit Rivers – just north of town is the Lower Baker Dam.

Emergency officials are going door to door to warn residents living in the 100-year-old floodplain of possible evacuations due to dam releases that are causing the Skagit River to rise rapidly.

Gusty winds are expected to continue until mid-week, increasing the risk of falling trees and loosening heavily saturated soil on hillsides.

Four small earthquakes were recorded near Concrete, which increased residents' fears. Tustin said he felt the house shaking, saying, “It was kind of startling when it hit. I thought the landslide was starting.”

The quakes came just a day after 32 homes received “preparedness” evacuation notices due to a landslide near Burpee Hill Road. Tustin noted, “I went up to see where it was sliding and just to see how much it was sliding. And it has more sliding. I saw a tree that wasn't there yesterday.” On December 10, eight homes in the Erickson Road neighborhood were told to “move now” due to the increased potential for landslides due to continued rainfall.

As the rain continues, local residents admit that the situation is out of their control. “If God chooses to do it, there's not much I can do about it anyway,” said Jay Thomas, who lives inside the evacuation zone.
