Isle of Man grant helps rebuild earthquake-hit Nepalese school

The Nepalese village of Qamrang has been officially twinned with Kirk Michael Village after ongoing work by Howard Green and PTN.

During his tenure as head teacher, he helped raise funds to build a school in the Nepalese village.

He said his connections between his chosen Isle of Man – where he moved in 1977 to begin his teaching career – and Nepal were built on lineage and philanthropy.

“My father served alongside Gurkha soldiers in World War II,” he said. “Nepalese and Gurkha soldiers have been loyal to Britain since 1815.”

PTN itself was formed by Tom Langridge and Chandra Bahadur Gurung, two former Queen's Gurkha's engineers.

Green said the head of Nepal's National Campaign for Education had visited the island “several times.”

“He worked in the Manx schools here, the Joiners [nature] “It's unbelievable,” he said.

“A number of people in Nepal say they dream of the Isle of Man.”

The reopening of the rebuilt mountaintop school was not complete without new uniforms for the children, and Mr Green's friends from Peel had “provided every student with sweatshirts bearing the Isle of Man flag”.

“They all walk around wearing the three-legged logo,” he added.
