The recent earthquakes in the WVC are likely aftershocks, not a sign of a larger earthquake

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A series of small earthquakes recently shook parts of West Valley City, worrying residents, but experts say the activity is normal.

“These recent earthquakes we’ve seen in West Valley City are most likely aftershocks from the 2020 Magna earthquake that a lot of people will remember,” said Adam Hiscock, a geologist with the Utah Geological Survey.

This 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck in March 2020 near Magna.

The latest activity includes a 2.0 magnitude earthquake recorded Wednesday morning, along with a 3.5 magnitude earthquake earlier this month. More than 800 aftershocks have been recorded since March 18, 2020, most of them too small to be felt, Hiscock said.

When asked if the recent quakes could point to something bigger, Hiscock said that was unlikely. “They probably do not indicate a larger earthquake in the future,” he added. “The ground is moving along this fault line, and it could take years for the pieces that moved in 2020 to settle. That’s likely what we’re seeing now.”

Aftershock sequences can last for decades, according to Hiscock, although the number and strength of quakes decrease over time.

While the recent cluster of earthquakes may seem alarming, Hiscock emphasized that they are a normal part of the fault’s natural process. He also said it’s a good reminder for residents to keep their emergency plans and supplies up to date.

“It’s a great reminder for people to be prepared in case there’s a larger earthquake in the future,” Hiscock said. “Get your gear and safety equipment ready to go.”
