LAFC faces a big test against coach Bruce Arena and the Earthquakes

No one has coached or won more MLB games than Bruce Arena, so when Arena talks about the league, you’re probably wise to listen. Wins in April are just as important as victories in October, however, and Sunday’s game against Los Angeles (5-1-1) looms as an important test for Arena’s squad, which has only two victories over teams with winning records.

When Arena returned to coach the league for the fourth time last season — not actually retiring — he took over a team whose last record was in 2013, and which had been put up for sale midway through the first season, adding to the instability around the franchise.

However, the coach managed to prevent this.

“There are a lot of things that could potentially happen here next year,” Arena said. “There is the possibility of new ownership and who knows where that takes us. So my focus is on this team at this time and the next game. I’m not trying to dictate a five-year plan right now.”

In Arena’s most successful years with the Galaxy, winning three MLS Cups and two Supporters’ Shields in five seasons, the team was stout defensively and that was also true of San Jose, who gave up a league-leading 20 shots and just two goals, tied with LAFC for the fewest in MLS.

Arena also successfully lured former German World Cup player Timo Werner to San Jose, signing him to a multi-year contract worth $5.4 million per season. That makes him the highest-paid player in franchise history, a significant investment for a team whose salaries were the second-lowest in Major League Soccer before Arena’s arrival.

Now comes the test against LAFC, a team that opened the season with a league-record six eliminations in a row while finishing third in the league in scoring with 15 goals in seven games. Additionally, Los Angeles advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, putting it one win away from becoming the first MLS team to reach the final of the region’s most important club tournament three times.

But as he did with his team, Arena is wary of taking too much of LAFC’s early success.

“Could they be one of the best teams in MLS history? Yes. But I would say they haven’t won as much as you can make that statement,” he said. “They have the best team in the league at the moment. I have no doubt about that.”

LAFC coach Mark dos Santos, whose team will play five games in the next 13 days, also had praise for San Jose.

“A very difficult competitor to play against,” he said. “Defensively, very compact. A team that doesn’t do much. It’s a team that works collectively together. They know what they want to do.

“The biggest game of our season again will be Sunday against San Jose.”
