On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck north-central Venezuela, adding a new layer of humanitarian needs to an already fragile context. Two weeks after the earthquakes, official figures reported that 4,490 people were killed, 16,740 people were injured, and 17,907 people were left without housing.

The earthquakes have created a major humanitarian emergency focused on children on top of already significant needs. Children and families have lost their homes, schools, access to safe water, health services and protection systems, while aftershocks continue to increase risks and complicate recovery.

UNICEF needs US$65.7 million to reach 470,000 people; Among them are 167 thousand children.

UNICEF’s response to the earthquake is fully consistent with the annex to the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan for Venezuela, which targets 1.3 million people affected by the earthquake in 7 states. Before the earthquakes, UNICEF’s Humanitarian Appeal for Children targeted 2.3 million people, including 1.2 million children, with a focus on meeting critical needs in health care, nutrition, safe water and sanitation, education and child protection services.
