PTI supports Achakzai’s call for boycott of federal budget

ISLAMABAD – Opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) claimed on Saturday that the ruling alliance had ordered a nationwide crackdown on its protests held the previous day to demand the release of jailed party leader Imran Khan, calling the action a “humiliating failure” of the regime.

The PTI-led opposition Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance launched its protest campaign with demonstrations in almost all major cities on Friday, although the party failed to stage a significant show of power in any area.

“Despite pre-dawn raids, fabricated FIRs and heavy police deployments, citizens across the country rejected the illegitimate government and took to the streets in large numbers,” PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said in a statement.

He strongly condemned the arrests of “peaceful” protesters and demanded their immediate and unconditional release. Akram dismissed the regime’s description of family reunions with former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in prison as a “confidence-building measure”, calling it “cynical theatre”. He stressed that these were fundamental constitutional rights and not favors from a “benevolent overlord”, as the regime continued to subject the PTI leader to prolonged solitary confinement and deliberate medical neglect.

He expressed full support for Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Mehmood Khan Achakzai’s call for a budget boycott unless Khan receives treatment at the hospital of his choice and his visitation rights are restored.

On the federal government’s decision to reduce petrol prices by Rs 6 per litre, he launched a sharp sarcasm, saying that after extracting over Rs 4.3 trillion through levies, the regime was now expecting applause for returning “crumbs”.

The Information Secretary said the PTI would continue its struggle with full intensity until the stolen mandate is restored, all political prisoners are released and proper medical care and family access are ensured for Khan and his wife. He said the people had already delivered their verdict and the regime’s attempts to rule by “creating fear and collecting crumbs” were quickly losing their effect.
