Trump to headline US 250th anniversary after artists drop out

WASHINGTON (AP) — An upcoming celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, “The Great American State Fair,” recently saw several musical guests withdraw, in part because of the event’s ties to U.S. President Donald Trump. Now, Trump himself is expected to headline the festivities, organizers announced Saturday.

“I understand that entertainers get ‘boos’ for their performance,” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social Saturday, adding that he was considering bringing in “the man some say is the greatest president in history (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP, to replace these highly paid third rate ‘entertainers.’

The group organizing the June fair on Washington’s National Mall, Freedom 250, confirmed the billing in a statement, writing: “We are delighted to announce that President Trump will personally kick off this historic celebration on Wednesday, June 24.” »

Trump’s social media post twice referred to a “Wednesday” rally, without a specific date. The White House did not immediately clarify this discrepancy.

Danielle Alvarez, a spokeswoman for Freedom 250, pointed out that the broader fair, scheduled for June 25 through July 10, includes an array of exhibits, family attractions, musical performances, flyovers and more.

In another article on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump suggested that the concert series may no longer be necessary if artists continue to withdraw. He discussed the possibility of giving a speech on the National Mall, presenting himself as a more powerful draw than any musical act.

“The fact is that I am, according to many, the number one attraction anywhere in the world,” Trump wrote. He added that he had “a much larger audience than Elvis in his heyday” and that he was “doing it without a guitar.”

The president said he was “directing my representatives to examine the feasibility of holding an AMERICA IS BACK rally.”

Trump has been dismissive of backtracking actions, suggesting the solution is to “undo it.”

“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250 people, instead of having overpriced singers that no one wants to hear, whose music is boring and yet all they do is complain,” Trump said on social media.

Freedom 250 is billed as nonpartisan, but was launched last year by Trump and is led by a former State Department official appointed during Trump’s first term. Several artists, including Bret Michaels, the Commodores and Martina McBride, dropped out last week.

Michaels and other artists have said they were misled about the theme of the shows or feared being drawn into a political fight. McBride, in a statement on Instagram, said she was “offered the opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event, but it turned out to be misleading.”

Other artists planning to attend include Flo Rida, Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice. The latter’s rep previously said the “Ice Ice Baby” rapper was “proud to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday!” »

It remains unclear whether replacement musicians will be recruited or whether Trump’s proposal to replace the performances with a rally is being seriously considered by organizers.
