Another day, another record – Cricket Ireland
An excellent batting performance from a captain on her birthday, a well managed chase and a little help from the weather saw Ireland Women beat the more fancied West Indies by 1 run at DLS in Clontarf today.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the West Indies started shakily losing three wickets in the opening powerplay, thanks to disciplined bowling by the Irish seamers. Ava Canning (2-11) bowled her usual in-swing balls at an awkward length, with opposition batters finding it difficult to square the ball, while captain Orla Prendergast at 24e birthday, struck twice with figures of 2-26.
Jannillea Glasgow (36 off 26 balls) top scored and was the only West Indian batsman to boss the Irish bowling attack as West Indies finished on 141-8 from their 20 overs.
With 142 still to win, under increasingly dark and stormy skies, the home side soon found themselves two wickets behind in the first over and staring down the barrel of a Caribbean juggernaut to crush their opponent before the rain came.
But the hour comes, the Prendergast. The elegant yet powerful batsman took control and hit a player with a match performance of 71* (46 balls), hitting 11 fours and a six in a 50-minute masterclass on innings management. First a 57-run partnership with Rebecca Stokell (12) and then a 34-run stand with Louise Little (9*) propelled Ireland towards the target.
Just as Ireland came within range, the heavens opened with the home side still three points behind DLS. The officials kept playing to see another ball thrown – and how crucial that was. Little swung the bat through the falling rain and got past the keeper four times. Ireland shot past the DLS goal. The rain became heavier and the umpires relented – the players left the field and as they could not return, Ireland were awarded their first ever win over West Indies Women in T20I cricket.
Ireland are back in action against Pakistan at the same venue on Thursday.
