Brexit: It doesn’t matter whether I support Leave or Remain – I would have become PM anyway, says Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson has rejected accusations he joined the campaign to leave the European Union a decade ago in a bid to take power, insisting “I would have been prime minister” regardless of which side of the Brexit debate he supported.

Mr Johnson’s surprising claim comes as he insists – in a two-part BBC documentary broadcast next week – that he supported leave out of principle rather than personal ambition. His decision, which was arguably crucial in swaying the electorate to vote to leave the European Union, came despite what he claims was a personal threat from then-Prime Minister David Cameron to “fuck you forever” if he campaigned against remaining in the EU.

But even though Mr Cameron says he does not remember using that language, he and his chancellor George Osborne reject Mr Johnson’s assertion that he was acting out of conviction rather than to gain support for the Conservative Party leadership from the right wing of the Conservative Party.

Mr Cameron says on the show: “I don’t think, at this stage, that he [Johnson] I really believed in it [Leave]. He thought he was going to lose.

“It had nothing to do with the EU, or Britain’s place in the world,” Mr Osborne adds, joking that Mr Johnson was playing Game of Thrones and he could “see the Iron Throne about to be liberated.”

Mr Johnson gets some support for his claim that he was motivated by sovereignty issues from his ex-wife Marina Wheeler KC, who says her own concerns about the encroachments of EU law had “an impact” on her husband’s thinking. This was reflected in the pro-Leave version of the two famous articles he wrote for the Daily Telegraph before deciding which direction to jump.

But unlike Ms Wheeler or the former Prime Minister himself, his sister Rachel, who personally pleaded with him to support Remain on the eve of his fateful decision, told him that the pro-Remain version of the article was far more powerful.

She said her brother’s pro-Leave plan was “essentially about” the fact that in the EU “we couldn’t determine the height of the wing mirrors on our trucks.

Among other points from award-winning documentary filmmaker Norma Percy’s tenth anniversary program on the Brexit referendum, A Very British Civil War:

  • There have been serious rows between pro-Leave Conservative MPs like Bernand Jenkin and Dominic Cummings over the latter’s conduct of the Vote Leave campaign, including the repeated claim – dismissed by the Institute of Fiscal Studies as “clearly absurd” – that Brexit would unlock £350m a week for the NHS.
  • After the June 16 murder of Labor MP Jo Cox, Gordon Brown wanted the three surviving former Labor leaders to launch a joint call for Remain, but then-leader Jeremy Corbyn refused to share a platform with Tony Blair.
  • Johnson describes himself as having only overcome his initial reluctance to make immigration a key issue because he was angry at a Sun report that anonymous members of the Remain camp had spread “false claims” that Marina Wheeler had been the lawyer seen in a “drunken melee” with a male colleague the previous summer.
  • Cameron and Osborne rejected advice from other figures in the Remain campaign – including Peter Mandelson – to tackle the mainstream threats of EU-led immigration, both from Vote Leave and the rival Leave.EU campaign led by Nigel Farage. Instead, they wanted to focus almost exclusively on claims that Brexit would affect individual family budgets.

The first episode of ‘A Very British Civil War’ will be broadcast on BBC Two on June 8.
