WASHINGTON, DC – Iran says it will suspend negotiations with the United States if Israel does not stop its escalating offensive in Lebanon

Iran announced Monday that it was suspending all communications with the United States unless Israel ends its escalating military offensive in southern Lebanon, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Referring to Israel, the news agency said that “taking into account the continued crimes of the Zionist regime in Lebanon and considering that Lebanon was one of the preconditions for the ceasefire and that this ceasefire was violated on all fronts, including in Lebanon, the Iranian negotiating team stops the ‘talks and exchange of texts through a mediator.’

He demanded an end to “aggressive and brutal military operations in Gaza and Lebanon” and called for Israel’s “complete withdrawal from occupied areas in Lebanon.”

There was no immediate confirmation from senior Iranian officials that diplomatic messages – mainly relayed through Pakistan between the warring sides – were suspended.

The Iranian announcement came shortly after the Israeli military warned residents of the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh, a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia, to leave ahead of planned airstrikes. A few hours later, these attacks had still not been launched.

President Trump told Truth Social following the Iranian statement that he had spoken to both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and, through intermediaries, Hezbollah leaders, and secured commitments to end the fighting that has left the ceasefire in tatters.

“I had a very productive call with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, and no troops are going to Beirut, and all troops en route have already been turned away. Also, through high-ranking representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting would stop, that Israel would not attack them, and that they would not attack Israel,” Trump wrote on the social media platform he owns.

He later added that “talks continue, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

There was no immediate response to his messages from Iran.

But Netanyahu issued a statement saying the Israeli army would “continue its operations in southern Lebanon as planned.”

“I spoke with President Trump this evening and told him that if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and civilians, Israel will strike terrorist targets in Beirut,” he said.

“Our position remains unchanged,” he added.

Oil prices put Trump under pressure

Trump is under increasing pressure to break the impasse that has kept the Strait of Hormuz closed for months. Before the United States and Israel launched their war against Iran three months ago, a fifth of the world’s oil supply passed through this strategic waterway. This traffic has all but stopped due to competing U.S. and Iranian blockades, driving up prices around the world.

Trump had sounded confident about negotiations with Iran earlier in the day, when he posted on Truth Social that “Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good deal for the United States.” He went on to say: “Just sit back and relax, everything will work out in the end – it always does!”

The United States and Iran said last week they were close to a tentative 60-day ceasefire extension and a framework to begin negotiations aimed at ending the war, but the deal still awaits Trump’s approval.

Israel has occupied large areas of southern Lebanon, displacing more than a million people there. The Israeli military has also stepped up airstrikes in Gaza, where a ceasefire was declared seven months ago. Israel claims to be targeting Hamas militants who attacked Israel in October 2023. But the bombings also left many civilians dead.

When the ceasefire was declared last October, Israeli forces occupied about half of Gaza’s territory. That area has since increased to 60%, and Netanyahu said last week that the Israeli military would soon claim 70% of Gaza.
