Emergency officials assess damage from the earthquake on Hawaii Island

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – Emergency officials are preparing to assess damage from last month’s Hawaii Island earthquake.

Hawaii County Civil Defense and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency will conduct joint preliminary damage assessments Tuesday through Thursday.

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck south Kona on May 22 and was felt across the state. In the days following the earthquake, residents reported structural damage, broken water lines and rockslides in several Hawaii Island communities.

The county received at least 300 reports of damage following the quake, officials said. Nearly 90 homes were reported to have sustained major damage, while seven were destroyed or collapsed.

Residents who have reported damage are expected to be contacted before assessment teams visit their properties.

According to Civil Defense, field visits will help determine the extent of earthquake-related damage and will serve as the basis for requests for state and federal disaster assistance.

Officials said information regarding any available assistance programs will be announced after decisions are made at the state and federal levels.
