President Trump unveiled a “Trump Promenade” plan behind the Lincoln Memorial to improve pedestrian access to the Potomac River.

President Donald Trump plans to build a promenade behind the Lincoln Memorial, he announced during a June 4 White House event.

“They want to call it the Trump Promenade, but I don’t know if I want to do that, but it’s going to be beautiful,” Trump said.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the promenade would connect the back of the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River and that the promenade was part of the McMillian Plan, the early 20th century plan that laid out the National Mall.

He said the proposed pedestrian bridge over the boardwalk would take visitors “all the way to the water.”

“Right now there is no pedestrian access,” Burgum said. “People come from all over the world and don’t know that 100 yards away is the beautiful Potomac River.”

The announced promenade is the latest in a series of construction projects launched by Trump, an effort that has reshaped the face of the nation’s capital.

During the event, he touted his proposed 250-foot arch on the Memorial Avenue corridor, which sparked lawsuits and public outcry.

“This is a bow that is a real bow, a magnificent bow for your military and your military victories,” Trump said of the bow. “No one has won more military victories, including recently, than us.”

He also demolished the East Wing of the White House to make way for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

Congress has not authorized the construction of a memorial arch on federal land managed by the National Park Service, which Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group, says is a first step required by law before the government can move forward with construction. Trump also did not seek congressional approval to begin construction of the ballroom, a fact that is disputed in court.
