US President Donald Trump said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a good friend and expressed confidence that the US and India would reach a trade deal.

“We will come to an agreement because I like your Prime Minister very much. He is a good friend of mine. We get along very well and we will reach an agreement,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

Responding to a question on the trade deal being negotiated between the two countries, Mr Trump said India had been taking advantage of US policies for years and imposing “huge tariffs”.

“They put huge tariffs on our companies, and we didn’t charge them anything,” Mr. Trump said.

A US delegation visited India earlier this week and concluded four days of negotiations on an interim bilateral agreement on Thursday (June 4).

India’s Commerce Ministry said the trade negotiations were marked by a spirit of cooperation and pragmatism, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to reaching a mutually beneficial agreement strengthening bilateral trade and economic ties.
